Uni campus at Albany plans $15m social hub

Massey University’s Albany campus is set to transform with a $15 million amenities hub designed to foster community and connection. The two-storey centre will include a food hall, retail outlets, student lounges, a health and counselling centre, and spaces for Māori and Pasifika students. Rāwā Karetai, president of the Albany Students’ Association, called the development “a long-awaited home base” for students, noting it has been a decade in the making. Funded partly through a student levy, the project marks a major milestone for the 7000-student campus, with construction expected to finish in early 2012 and future accommodation plans also on the horizon.

Association fights bill

The Albany Students’ Association is opposing the proposed Freedom of Association Amendment Bill, which could end compulsory student union membership.
